The short answer: choose the TaylorMade P790 or Titleist T200 if you want a compact players-distance shape, and start with the Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL if easy launch and forgiveness are the priority. The correct choice still depends on your strike pattern, preferred flight, shaft and the exact set in stock. Karibu Golf currently lists all three models in Kenya: TaylorMade P790, Titleist T200 and Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL.
This is a specification-led buying comparison, not a claim that one model wins for every player. We have used manufacturer information and the current Karibu listings. Ask for photographs and the precise shaft, flex, handedness and set composition before paying.
Quick comparison
- TaylorMade P790: a hollow-body players-distance iron with a forged 4340M face in the 2025 model. It suits a golfer who wants a compact look with speed and useful forgiveness.
- Titleist T200: a players-distance iron with a forged face, hollow construction, Max Impact technology and a Tour-inspired profile. It suits a golfer who values a clean shape and controlled distance.
- Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL: a high-launch, deep-cavity game-improvement iron. Callaway says it is built for moderate-to-average swing speeds that need more launch to maximise carry.
Those categories are the biggest difference. P790 and T200 try to combine a refined head with distance technology. Ai Smoke HL starts from a more confidence-inspiring cavity-back shape and prioritises height and forgiveness.
Which iron is easiest to launch?
On paper, the Ai Smoke HL is the clear starting point. “HL” means High Launch, and Callaway designed it with a low, deep centre of gravity, longer blade lengths and a deep cavity. Its 7-iron is 30 degrees. The manufacturer says its Ai Smart Face uses swing data to support launch, spin and distance across the face.
The P790 and T200 are not low-launch blades, but their compact visual profiles may suit a different buyer. TaylorMade describes the P790 as mid-high launching within its range. Titleist uses dense tungsten placement to tune launch through the T200 set. A player who already launches the ball high may prefer the visual and flight characteristics of one of these two, but a fitting is the best way to know.
Which iron looks most compact?
P790 and T200 both target golfers who want a cleaner players-style appearance. TaylorMade gives the 2025 P790 a thinner topline and progressive leading edge. Titleist describes T200 as having less offset, an optimised blade length and a topline shaped from player feedback.
Ai Smoke HL has a longer blade and wider proportions than those two. That is intentional: the head is designed to look stable behind the ball and place mass where it can help launch. If a compact shape gives you confidence, compare P790 and T200 first. If a larger hitting area looks more reassuring, try Ai Smoke HL first.
Distance versus stopping power
Do not compare distance using the number printed on the sole alone. Loft, club length, shaft, ball speed, launch and spin all matter. The reference 7-iron loft is 30 degrees on the 2025 P790, 30.5 degrees on the 2023 T200, and 30 degrees on the Ai Smoke HL. That puts the nominal lofts close, but it does not make their flight identical.
A useful comparison checks both carry distance and whether the shot lands at a playable angle. Ten extra metres is not automatically better if the ball cannot hold the green or leaves a large gap to the next club. Ask to compare carry, peak height, landing angle and left-to-right dispersion.
Forgiveness and strike pattern
Forgiveness is not one universal number. A player who misses low on the face can benefit from a different sole or centre-of-gravity position than someone whose common miss is toward the toe.
The Ai Smoke HL is the most overtly game-improvement design here, with a deep cavity and a wider sole. P790 and T200 use hollow constructions and internal weighting to retain ball speed in smaller-looking heads. If your contact moves around the face, test your real misses rather than choosing from a centre-strike demonstration.
Shaft, flex and total weight
The head name gets attention, but the shaft can change how the whole club feels. Steel is not automatically for strong players, and graphite is not only for seniors. Both are available in a range of weights and bend profiles.
A lighter graphite build may help some players create speed or reduce fatigue. A heavier steel build may give another player better tempo and face control. The labels Regular, Stiff and Senior are not perfectly standardised across manufacturers. Confirm the exact shaft model and weight, not only the flex letter. Read our steel vs graphite iron-shaft guide for the full checklist.
Set makeup and wedge gaps
The current Karibu P790 listing is 4–PW. The T200 and Ai Smoke HL listings include 4–PW plus an approach wedge. Confirm every club physically included before paying.
The pitching wedge lofts also differ: 44 degrees in P790, 43 degrees in T200 and 43 degrees in Ai Smoke HL. The listed approach wedges are 48 degrees for T200 and 47 degrees for Ai Smoke HL. Check the loft of your next specialist wedge so you do not create an awkward scoring gap.
Who should shortlist each model?
TaylorMade P790
Shortlist P790 if you like a compact, modern players shape and want distance help without moving to a large cavity-back head. It is also the best-documented Karibu listing, with multiple product photographs and a detailed specification page.
Titleist T200
Shortlist T200 if you want a clean Titleist profile, players-distance construction and a set that reaches from 4-iron to approach wedge. Pay particular attention to the installed shaft, because Titleist offers many different stock and custom profiles.
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL
Shortlist Ai Smoke HL if you need help launching the ball, prefer a more forgiving cavity-back shape or have a moderate swing speed. Confirm that the exact HL model is being quoted; Callaway also made standard Ai Smoke and Max Fast versions with different specifications.
A five-step buying check
- Confirm the exact model and generation. Similar model names can refer to different years.
- Confirm every included club. Write down 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW and any approach wedge.
- Record the shaft. Get the manufacturer, model, material, weight and flex.
- Check handedness and condition. Request current photographs of the actual set.
- Compare the complete Kenya price. Use the live Karibu price and confirm delivery or collection before payment.
Frequently asked questions
Is P790 more forgiving than T200?
Both are players-distance irons designed to add speed and forgiveness in a relatively compact head. Their forgiveness will feel different depending on where you strike the face, so neither is automatically more forgiving for every golfer.
Is Ai Smoke HL only for beginners?
No. It is designed for golfers who benefit from higher launch and a confidence-inspiring cavity-back head. That can include improving players and experienced golfers with moderate swing speed.
Which is best for a high-handicap golfer?
Ai Smoke HL is the logical first test because it is the most game-improvement-oriented model. Handicap alone is not enough to fit an iron, so also consider strike pattern, speed, launch and preferred head shape.
